How It Works

The System

Nine moving 3-D target stations set at varying distances, walk-out from behind blinds. Each target represents an ethical bowhunting shot. Some target stations include decoy targets, forcing the shooter to quickly make decisions based on shot placement, distance, and the execution of the shot. The elk target simulates a walking elk and does not stop until it is shot. Otherwise, the target will continue walking and disappear. You will shoot this target twice, making a total shot count of 10 targets for a complete round.

Arrow-stopping backstops and hide panels create safe shooting for both indoor and outdoor applications.

The Shooting Sequence

Competitors shoot two 5-shot rounds from a treestand and are presented a new target every 15 seconds, never knowing which target is next. However, you have to pay close attention to what walks out! No-shoot situations can happen anytime.

The real key to shooting this system is to always remember that a new target appears every 15 seconds. You don't have time to admire your good shots. Load fast, aim hard, and pay attention to what walks out. If you get behind on the clock it is very difficult to make it back up.

You may shoot as many rounds as you like. But only your best score goes forward and you can only win one place. Prize packs are awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place scores at the end of the event and you do not have to be present to recieve your prize pack. Prize packs are made up of various bowhunting gear from our sponsors. The average value of the packs are $500.00 for 1st Place, $250.00 for 2nd, and $75.00 for 3rd. The packs can vary from time to time depending on what gear our sponsor want to include at that time.

We also have Bounty Targets that change throughout the competition. Shoot a perfect shot on the Bounty Target and you will instantly win one of our many good shooting prizes.

Scoring

Targets are scored using a 10, 15, and 20 point vitals area. Any shot outside of the vitals area is considered a wound and receives a 5 point deduction. Shooting a doe or a buck with less than a 6-point rack will result in a deduction of 10 points. See "Competition Rules" for more details on scoring.

A Bowhunting Educational Tool

Many times after shooting the competition, shooters will comment that they learned a thing or two about their equipment, their equipment set-up, or their shooting form. And that they plan to make changes before the next hunting season. The Bowhunter Challenge educates the bowhunter on:

  • Target identification and proper shot placement.
  • Bowhunting equipment and set-up.
  • The benefits of regular practice.
  • Shooting form.
  • The importance of correct yardage estimations.
